Pink Buddha

There is a statue of Buddha in a small lotus pond at the entry of the Buddist temple nearby Halla Botanical Garden.   I started this painting as a winter scene with snow-covered background on a frozen pond filled with dead stalks of lotus.  However, the season has changed already, and there is a sweet flavor of Spring in the air, so I changed the color scheme as such.  But I still wanted to capture my first strong impression by the small stone statue of Buddha.  It seemed to exude such love and blessings to all; human, birds, animals, trees and all.

한라수목원 근처에 있는 사찰 앞의 조그만 연꽃 연못에 부처님 동상이 있다.  나는 이 그림을 겨울철에 맞게 죽은 연꽃대로 가득찬 얼어있는 연못에 눈이 덮힌 배경으로 시작했다. 그렇지만 벌써 계절이 바뀌어 공기에는 달콤한 봄의 향기가 물씬하니 나는 거기에 맞게 색채를 바꾸었다.  하지만 나는 그 조그만 부처님 동상에서 처음 받은 강렬한 인상을 여전히 나타내고 싶었다.  그 부처님 동상에서는 인간, 새, 동물, 나무 와 그 모든 존재들에게 보내는 사랑과 축복이 가득 스며나오는 것 같았다.
